Quick Notes on Planning Your Website

So you are planning to launch a new website and want to engage a web design company. If it’s your first time launching a website, here are some notes on how you should do some quick planning (without getting too technical) so that you can communicate effectively with your web design team for a smooth project.

The two points below should help you get you started on a fruitful web design overview planning discussion without getting too technical.

Interestingly, this article goes pretty much with one of our favourite Sun Tzu quotes “Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.”.

1. Know what you represent (know thy self)

The number one thing that you need to your web design team to know is what your company represents and what the website should communicate.

Here’s a quick checklist.

  • What are your goals of having the website?
  • What are the key products/services of your company?
  • Who are your potential customers?
  • Who are your competitors?

2. Be better than your competition (know thy enemy)

Where better to find inspiration than your competitors? Your competitors might not have the best websites, or they may, but one of the key things you can do is to evaluate what your competitors have done right or wrong.

With a list of your competitors, raise a fruitful discussion with your web design team.

  • What are some of the good things to learn from the competitors?
  • What are some things to avoid?
  • What are the must-have elements in each website?
  • How can we make the must-haves better than the competitors?

That’s a wrap for our short and precise notes on planning your website.

Hope these notes can help you in your process of planning our your website, which should lead you to the next phase of wireframes and design mockups.
